The Most Talked About Train In The Country
- Inaugurated on March 20, 1949, the California Zephyr was operated by the Chicago Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q), Rio Grande (D&RGW), and Western Pacific (WP). This route was know as The Scenic Way across America, an advertising slogan originally introduced by the steam and heavyweight-equipped Exposition Flyer of 1939. Operating from Chicago to San Francisco, the CZ covered 2,532 miles. CB&Q had the largest segment of trackage at 1,034 miles, while D&RGW and WP had 570 and 928, respectively. Equipment for the CZ started arriving in 1948 and the railroads used some of the cars on the Exposition Flyer until the complete CZ consist was ready. The Lounge, Dining and trademark Observation cars were stored until the train was ready to make its debut in 1949. With five dome cars, the CZ provided an excellent view of the beautiful Western scenery.
